Dolphins of the Indian River Lagoon

Exploring the unique habitat of our resident dolphin population.

    A Unique Estuary Habitat

The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America, and it is the primary sailing ground for Cocoa Beach Catamaran. This incredible body of water is home to a unique population of Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins.

Unlike ocean dolphins that travel vast distances, the dolphins in the lagoon are considered a "resident" population. They are born here, they live here, and they raise their calves here.

    The Lagoon Dolphin Population

    • There are an estimated 1,000 resident dolphins living in the Indian River Lagoon system.
    • They have adapted to the shallow, brackish water environment of the estuary.
    • They have unique hunting strategies, such as trapping fish against the shallow seagrass beds.
    • Because they don't migrate, we are able to see them year-round during our sailing tours.

    Protecting Their Home

The health of the dolphin population is directly tied to the health of the Indian River Lagoon. Clean water and healthy seagrass are essential for the fish populations that the dolphins rely on.

At Cocoa Beach Catamaran, we believe in responsible eco-tourism. We operate our vessels safely around wildlife and strive to educate our guests about the importance of protecting this fragile ecosystem.
