Dolphins of Cocoa Beach
Discover the playful and intelligent bottlenose dolphins that call the Space Coast home.
Meet The Local Dolphins
Cocoa Beach and the surrounding Indian River Lagoon are home to a thriving population of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Unlike migratory dolphins, many of the dolphins in this area are resident, meaning they live here year-round.
These highly intelligent marine mammals are a favorite sighting for our guests. They are often seen traveling in small pods, hunting for fish, and occasionally playing in the wake of boats. The calm, protected waters of the lagoon and coastal areas provide a perfect habitat for them to thrive.
Fascinating Dolphin Facts
- •Bottlenose dolphins can swim up to 20 miles per hour.
- •They use echolocation to find prey in murky waters.
- •Each dolphin has a unique signature whistle, similar to a name.
- •They are highly social animals that live in groups called pods.
- •Adult bottlenose dolphins can eat 15 to 30 pounds of food a day.
Where To See Them
Dolphins are frequently spotted throughout the Indian River Lagoon, the Banana River, and the coastal waters around Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral. They are often seen near docks, channel markers, and shallow grass flats where they hunt for mullet and other small fish.
One of the best ways to see dolphins in their natural habitat is aboard a sailing catamaran. The quiet nature of sailing allows us to observe these magnificent creatures without the loud engine noise that can sometimes disturb them.
