Wildlife For Kids
Fun facts, activities, and explorer guides for our youngest sailors!
Welcome, Junior Explorers!
Are you ready for an adventure? The Indian River Lagoon is like a giant, underwater jungle filled with amazing animals. Here are some fun facts to learn before you set sail with us!
🐬 Awesome Dolphin Facts
- 1They have names! Dolphins give themselves a specific whistle (like a name) so their friends know who is calling.
- 2Half-asleep! When dolphins sleep, they only close one eye and turn off half their brain so they don't forget to breathe.
- 3Super sonar! They use echolocation (making clicking sounds that bounce off objects) to "see" fish hidden in the muddy water.
🌊 Marvelous Manatee Facts
- 1Mermaid myths! Long ago, sailors thought manatees were mermaids. (They must have needed glasses!)
- 2Eating machines! Manatees eat up to 100 pounds of seagrass every single day. That's like eating 400 salads!
- 3Elephant cousins! Even though they live in the water, their closest relatives on land are elephants.
